Approaches to functional genomics of host tolerance in vector borne parasitic diseases of cattle
Funded by: The Wellcome Trust
Trypanosomiasis (or sleeping sickness) in cattle which is caused by the parasites Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax and carried by the tsetse fly is endemic in parts of Africa. This disease is a major constraint on cattle production which is the main source of income for many small farmers. This multi-disciplinary, multi-centre project aims to call on a range of expertise and experience in order to identify the genes which control resistance to this parasite in both cattle and a mouse model of the disease.
This project is collaborative with Steve Kemp (Liverpool & ILRI, Kenya), Andy Brass (Manchester), John Gibson (University of New England, Australia). Group staff involved: Alan Archibald, Susan Ansell, Laurence Hall
