MSc Animal Biosciences

Welcome to the MSc in Animal Biosciences

One Biology, One Health, One Medicine

The similarities between animal and human medicine and the links between them are increasingly recognised. Animals can act as models for conditions that affect humans and other animals. The environment provides a link between us and the animals that share our lives. Using a multidisciplinary approach, collaborations between veterinarians, physicians and scientists can tackle issues such as emerging zoonoses (diseases transmitted between humans and animals), shared environmental impacts and the positive benefits of interacting with our animal companions.

This exciting MSc provides students with scientific knowledge and practical skills to carry out research in the emerging area of animal science and "One Health", by providing foundation knowledge about the functioning of the animal body. We explore applications of basic animal sciences to veterinary and human medicine, the livestock industry and food security. Students will graduate with a wide experience of techniques in animal biosciences, leading to careers in research, industry, government and other areas.

This programme at the world famous Roslin Institute offers high calibre candidates the opportunity to develop these skills in a range of fields in animal science. The programme is delivered using a blend of lectures, guided practical studies and independent research.

The programme is delivered by international experts from The Roslin Institute and the wider University. You will become part of The Roslin Institute and will attend seminars, lab meetings and other Roslin activities as well as following the formal taught programme.

The programme is open to students with a biological background who are interested in enhancing their skills in the animal biosciences and developing an understanding of animal science research, for example, students with first degrees in biological, biomedical, veterinary or allied health sciences.

The programme commenced in 2011 and the fifth intake have just completed their studies, after five successful intakes in which graduates have found positions in universities, government and industry. Enrolments are now open for academic year 2017–2018. Please contact roslin.mscstudies@roslin.ed.ac.uk for information.
