Genetics and Genomics

Summary of Research

My field of interest is avian genomics and development. Our primary research is in the chicken although we are also involved in comparative genomic analysis of other avian species. Our lab was part of the Chicken Genome Sequencing Consortium – the output from which has proved invaluable to our research. I am currently particularly interested in the avian immune genes – Which genes do birds have? How do they compare/differ in various species? How do they function? How are they responsible for inherent resistance to disease?

My other interest is in developmental genetics, with the chicken being an ideal model for such studies. Our lab is currently involved in the ChickATLAS project, which is concerned with developing a 3D atlas of gene expression patterns in the developing chick embryo.
