• received an O.B.E. for services to science in 2008

• internationally recognized leading scientist in TSE research
• developed, delivered and manage a high international scientific programme
• appointed Head of the TSE Division of the Institute for Animal Health (IAH) (now Neurobiology Division of The Roslin Institute) 2003

• established the Scottish Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy Network (STN) to promote excellence in TSE research and a better public understanding of the TSEs

• a widely sought referee of scientific papers for a wide variety of journals, including Science and EMBO
• a referee for grants to various national and international bodies, including BBSRC, MRC, DEFRA, FSA, Telethon and Alberta Ingenuity
